A Musical Journey Beyond Accompaniment

A child prodigy. A dedicated disciple. A soloist with a vision. A musician committed to bringing the harmonium to centre stage.

Santosh Ghante began making his mark in the world of music at a remarkably young age, earning recognition as a child prodigy, particularly for his exceptional command over the harmonium. He is a devoted disciple of the legendary harmonium maestro, Late Pandit Appasaheb Jalgaonkar, under whose guidance he received intensive training from 2002 to 2009. Rooted in this rich musical lineage, Santosh has developed a distinctive artistic identity, combining tradition, innovation and an unwavering commitment to his instrument.

Championing the Harmonium as a Solo Instrument

At the heart of Santosh Ghante’s musical journey lies a clear and enduring vision: to establish the harmonium as an independent solo concert instrument, capable of commanding the stage in its own right.

While his artistry embraces the harmonium’s versatility across ghazals, folk music, fusion and accompaniment, his foremost passion is to explore its expressive depth as a solo instrument. Through his performances and ongoing research, he continues to expand the possibilities of harmonium playing and challenge conventional perceptions of its role in Indian music..

His contribution has earned him the National Scholarship for Harmonium awarded by the Government of India, along with recognition for his dedication and achievements in music.

Sharing Music Across Borders

Santosh has performed extensively in India and internationally, taking the rich traditions of Indian music to audiences across 47+ countries. His international performances have included countries such as Dubai (UAE), Singapore, South Africa, Madagascar, Bahrain, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and Mauritius.

His solo performances in Mauritius received appreciation from the country’s Prime Minister, Dr. Navin Chandra Ramgoolam, marking a memorable milestone in his artistic journey.

An accomplished accompanist, Santosh has shared the stage with distinguished artists, including Pandit Birju Maharaj, Ustad Aslam Hussain Khan, Ustad Liyakat Ali Khan, Ustad Akram Khan, Pandit Kalinath Mishra, Pandit Shreedhar Parthasarathy, Pandit Anand Bhate, Pandit Ram Deshpande, Pandit Jayateerth Mevundi and Pandit Kaivalyakumar Gurav, Dr. Pt. Ajay Pohankar, Pt. Rajendra Gangani, Pt. Raja Kale among many others.

His musical explorations also extend to fusion, with associations with groups and projects such as Tarang, Rangrangiya—presented by Maati Baani as an online musical collaboration between India and Pakistan—and Survishkar.

Preserving the Legacy of His Guru

For Santosh, music is not only a performing art; it is also a legacy to be preserved and passed on.

In tribute to his Guru, Late Pandit Appasaheb Jalgaonkar, he undertook the painstaking task of collecting archival newspaper articles, photographs and interviews featuring artists who had known and worked with Appaji. This dedication culminated in Sursakha, a book co-authored with his friend G. K. Parmeshwar, documenting and honouring the life, contribution and musical legacy of his Guru.

Santosh has also initiated a state-level award in the name of Pandit Appasaheb Jalgaonkar to recognise individuals who have made significant contributions to the harmonium. He continues to advocate for greater recognition of Appaji’s contribution to Indian music, including the inclusion of his biography in the curriculum of Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal.

Music with a Social Purpose

Driven by the belief that music should reach beyond concert halls, Santosh founded Sanvadini Kala Manch on 3 October 2010. With an emphasis on nurturing talent and making music accessible, its early initiatives included selecting 25 children interested in music from an orphanage and supporting their musical aspirations

He also led Mission Rural Area: Classical Music, an initiative designed to introduce and create awareness of Indian classical music among rural communities.

Through these efforts, Santosh continues to contribute to the social and cultural development of his community, creating opportunities for learning, participation and appreciation of music.

A Journey That Continues

Santosh Ghante’s performances and musical contributions have reached audiences through platforms including MTV, Doordarshan, Sahyadri, Namah TV (Karnataka), MBC (Mauritius) and Pakhawaj Parva on DD Bharati.

As a performer, researcher, mentor and cultural advocate, he remains committed to exploring the harmonium’s untapped potential and inspiring future generations of musicians.

For Santosh Ghante, the harmonium is more than an accompanying instrument. It is a complete musical voice—rich in expression, limitless in possibility and deserving of its own place at the centre of the concert stage.
